Text of the Obituary follows:
Death of Robert King
Our town has suffered a great loss in the death of Robert King, a pioneer citizen who has lived in this polace for the last fifty-three years. Mr Kikng's health began to fail about a year ago and after being confined to his bed about a month, his spirit gently passed away early last hursday morning.
Robert King with the eldest son of William and Eliza (Kewell) King, and was born in Guilford, Surrey county, England, Sept. 30th, 1830. There were eleven children in the family. Three of his sisters are living at Wichita, Kans., and two brothers survive, Thomas King of Galveston, Texas and Henry King of Gulfport, Miss.
Robert King was educated at Ackworth, Yorkshire and was employed in the linen- drapers business, and afterwards in the corn trade before he came to Amer4ica in 1853 ??. He found a relative at Ceres, Mr. John King, who was of much help to him. Having tried the milling business at Rochester, N. Y., he settled in Smethport in 1854 ??, and became the surveryor for the Keating lands in McKean and Forest counties, in which position he served until a very few years ago.
In 1858, he married Pauline Elizabeth Hamlin, a sister of Henry and John O.Hamlin. Three of a family of five children with the mother, Mrs. King, remain at the family home on Main street.
Mr. Robert King was noted as the best woodsman in McKean and Forest counties, and for his very accurate and painstaking work, of whatever kind. He had a mechanical turn and loved to make things, and would have made a fine architect and buildeer. The family in England belonged to the Society of Friends, and to this body Robert King adhered all his life, being true to their plain, honest, preacable ways, and the simple life of brotherly love and good will to all, of quietness and contentment. Mr King had from boyhood the traits which made him a general favorite, and no one in this place was better liked and esteemed for his fine qualities of mind and heart.
The funeral service was on last Saturday at the hom, Rev. J. H. McCandless officiating. The interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
