Biography
Hannah Hamlin Chambers passed away December 11, 2010 at River Hospital in Alexandria Bay. She was surrounded by her family. Born on February 22, 1938, in Bradford, PA, Mrs. Chambers (affectionately known as GaGa) was the youngest of three girls born to Susan Hamlin and Lowell Oakes. She attended Southern Seminary Boarding School, Smethport High and Potsdam College. Hannah was the first female to attend and graduate college in her family. She accomplished this while mothering five children and much of the neighborhood in Gouverneur, NY. After graduation, she became an English teacher at Gouverneur High School. In 1978, Hannah and her then husband, John, bought Clayton Marina in the 1000 Islands. A lifetime summer resident of the 1000 Islands, Hannah was most happy on a dock, or in a boat, on the St. Lawrence River. She sold the marina in 2005, retiring to her dream house on the banks of the mighty St. Lawrence where she loved watching the ships on the seaway. Renowned for her cooking and unmatched generosity, Hannah was loved by many. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and the Circle of Friends. Additionally, she was a contributor to many charities and organizations. Special to her heart were Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital, Christ Episcopal Church, Circle of Friends, Thousand Islands Emergency Response Services (TIERS,) the Clayton Fire Department, and Relay for Life. Hannah is survived by her five children, Laura (Audie) Cerow and Susie Larkins, all of Clayton, NY, JoAnn (Donald) Hall, Pennellville, NY, Charlie (Sue) Chambers, Oneida, NY, and Nancy (Gene) Aubertine, Cape Vincent, NY; and her grandchildren, Leah (Bryan) Tidd, Alison Cerow, Thomas Hall, Asa Hall, Nathan Hall, Anna Larkins, Megan Godfrey, Hannah (Katie) Chambers, Nancy Jayne Chambers, and Quincy and Delaney Aubertine. Her mother, Susan Hamlin Coleman, and her sister, Molly Johnson, died before her. She has a sister, Suckie Oakes. A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, Clayton, on December 26, 2010, at 1 p.m. A reception will follow in the parish hall. There will be no calling hours. Arrangements are with Cummings Funeral Service, Inc., Clayton. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to River Hospital Foundation-PO Box 567, Alexandria Bay, NY; Christ Church-Hugunin Street, Clayton; or TIERS-PO Box 524, Clayton, NY.
